The race in the electric-car space is so far, being led by the Nissan Leaf.
In June, Nissan sold 1,708 Leaf units in the U.S., easily overshadowing Chevrolet's Volt, which tallied 561 unit sales. The Leaf's strong showing followed a similarly impressive May when Nissan sold 1,142 Leaf units. Chevrolet sold 481 Volts.
Nissan's Leaf is a fully electric vehicle. The car is capable of driving for approximately 75 miles on a single charge. The Volt, on the other hand, drives for about 35 miles on a single charge before its gas engine kicks in to take drivers the rest of the way.
Though the Volt is far behind in sales, it has little, if anything, to do with the car's popularity. Speaking to Automobile Magazine in a story published earlier this week, Chevrolet spokesman Rob Peterson said that the small sales number is due to his company's Volt production plant being offline over the last five weeks while the company renovates it to increase production.
Peterson told Automobile Magazine that three times as many Volts will be built in the new plant, and the company still expects to sell 10,000 units by the end of this year.
